What Professionals Do to Test Ducts
When professionals come to your home to test your ducts, they place the entire household ventilation system under high pressure.
First, the technicians seal off all room vents around the house to close off the ventilation system. Next, they attach a large power vacuum onto the main supply duct that comes from the heater and AC cabinet that leads to the rest of the ventilation system. This vacuum increases the air pressure within the sealed ducts. The technician use manometers to measure the air pressure and watch how quickly it starts to decline. The faster the decline, the more leaks in the system.
The test gives the professionals a good idea of how extensive the duct leaks are and where to locate them. Using this information, they can recommend duct repairs and duct sealing. In some cases, the ventilation system may need duct replacement.
How Often to Schedule Duct Testing
When should you arrange to have your ductwork tested? There are two different scenarios:
- When you notice signs of leaking ducts: There are a number of warnings that will tell you the ducts are losing air. Your AC/heating bills may start to rise for no discernible reason. The airflow from the vents plunges, creating hot and cold spots in the house. The ventilation system makes odd rattling noises whenever the AC or heater comes on. If you think that something is wrong with the ductwork, you should have testing done as soon as possible and have the problem addressed.
- Every few years: Duct testing is a good routine precaution. It’s not something you’ll need every year, but once every 4 to 5 years will help you catch efficiency issues before they become larger. The ducts in homes do tend to wear down over time, so at some point, you’ll probably need sealing or repairs, and regular testing will catch this.
