Dual Fuel Systems

Dual Fuel Systems in Raleigh, NC

Heat pumps have risen in popularity for homes over the last few decades. These comfort systems are based on the same mechanical principal as air conditioners: the circulation of chemical refrigerant to transfer heat from one location to another.

The difference with heat pumps is that they can transfer heat either from or into a house, working as both a heating and cooling system. But heat pumps come with a drawback, which is that siphoning heat from the outdoors in order to create indoor warmth isn’t easy on the coldest days of the year.

Their efficiency can suffer. But there’s a solution to this dilemma, and it’s one that Comfort Master Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc. offers: dual fuel systems. Contact us to find out more about these hybrid heat pumps and to schedule service to install, repair, or maintain one in Raleigh, NC and the surrounding areas.

The Hybrid Heat Dual Fuel System: How It Works

As we mentioned above, a heat pump can struggle with removing enough heat from the cold outdoors to bring to the indoors. To prevent a drop in efficiency when the weather becomes too cold, a dual fuel system connects the heat pump to a back–up heating system, usually a gas or propane–powered furnace.

When the heat pump drops below what’s called the "economic balance point," i.e. the temperature where it loses its energy efficiency, the back–up furnace automatically comes on to make up the difference. The furnace will only remain on as long as it is needed to help the heat pump.

Do You Need a Dual Fuel Heat Pump for Your Home?

Heat pump technology continues to increase, making them more efficient than ever at handling the cold weather. But in some situations a home will need to have a hybrid heat pump to get through the worst parts of the winter, particularly a home that lacks good insulation. (Historic houses often have this problem.) How can you know if your home should have a dual fuel system installed rather than a standalone heat pump?

Answering that question is simple: you just contact our HVAC installation professionals. You don’t want to install any heating system yourself, anyway, so make certain that you have our experienced heating experts on the job from the start. They’ll find out if it’s more feasible to go with a heat pump, a hybrid heat pump, or some other type of comfort system. You are our main priority on every job!
