Ductless Systems in Raleigh, NC

The method of providing air conditioning or forced-air heating for an entire house that most people are familiar with is a central AC connected to a duct network. The ventilation system sends air through the ductwork and out through vents into the rooms.

Although you’ll still find this type of central air conditioner in the majority of homes, there is another option that increases in popularity with each year: ductless mini splits. These options for ductless heating and air conditioning are well-suited for new home construction and for older homes without space for ducts.

If you need service for ductless mini split systems in Raleigh, NC and the surrounding areas, trust Comfort Master Heating & Air Conditioning, Inc.. How Does a Ductless Mini Split Operate?

This is the key question for people who are learning about ductless options for cooling and heating. Basically, a ductless mini split is a type of heat pump. Like all heat pumps, it circulates refrigerant between two sets of coils to move heat from one location to another. In heating mode, the refrigerant transports thermal energy from the outdoor to the indoors; in cooling mode, the direction switches.

Where the conventional central AC achieves this using two cabinets—indoor and outdoor—a ductless mini split uses multiple indoor units. Instead of one indoor air handler with a refrigerant coil connected to ductwork, there are small air handler units placed in different spots around the house. Usually they are mounted on the walls, often above windows. The refrigerant coil in each air handler conditions the air and a blower fan sends this air straight into the living spaces.

Reasons to Consider Ductless Air Conditioning and Heating

There are a number of benefits to such a system, although not every home will receive them. This is why you should always talk over your options with a professional installer. Below are some advantages you may enjoy from a ductless mini split installation:

  • Energy savings – Ductless systems gain and lose less heat because the air doesn’t have to travel long distances through ducts. The small air handlers also consume less energy than a larger single indoor unit.
  • Zone control – The individual air handlers of a ductless system can be operated separately from each other. You only need to cool/heat the rooms in your house that need it—and that’s another way to save energy.
  • Space–saving – For new home construction or add–on rooms, a ductless heating and cooling system offers greater freedom. If you have an older home that simply lacks room for ductwork, a ductless mini split allows you to enjoy central heating and cooling anyway.
